SUMMARY:Strawberry Thanksgiving and Communion - Online
DESCRIPTION:Join us online Wednesday\, September 24th at 10:00-11:30 AM for Strawberry Thanksgiving and Communion\, and take your acknowledgement of Territory to the next level by considering the Spiritual Covenant. \nMany congregations who have been acknowledging the territory for the past few years are asking what meaningful action they can take to move their acknowledgment from words to actions. You are invited to Strawberry Thanksgiving and Communion\, an online opportunity to begin the conversation about making a spiritual covenant. \nYou’re warmly invited\nto this special event featuring Adrian Jacobs of the Turtle Clan\, Cayuga Nation\, sharing on the Spiritual Covenant—a reflection on land\, relationship\, and reconciliation on Wednesday\, September 24th\, from 10:00-11:30 AM. \nAdrian Jacobs will offer a leadership in this workshop and communion service that will inform and inspire the discernment of churches on any traditional territory who wish to consider concrete action to live into their acknowledgment of territory. The workshop and worship will be grounded in history and scripture\, and will invite you to deeper relationship with the land and the peoples on the land\, and the Creator\, Christ and Spirit. (For more information about the Strawberry Thanksgiving and Communion and the Spiritual Covenant\, see below.) \nThe road to a decision about a faithful action by your community of faith is an ongoing journey. Come prepared to engage and to learn\, and then bring your reflections to your home church for prayerful consideration. \nBread and Juice for Communion\nThis workshop will include an online communion service\, so have your own juice and bread ready. For juice\, you are invited to honour Indigenous tradition with strawberry juice\, a local Indigenous medicine.  If you would like to make strawberry juice\, here is a simple recipe you can use:\nhttps://tworowtimes.com/healthy-roots/jihsodahk-the-leader-of-the-plants/. If you are not able to use strawberry juice\, feel free to bring any fruit juice of your choice. \nRegister in advance for this event:\nhttps://united-church.zoom.us/meeting/register/2BNM7atZRhKNuAGAeO_1nA\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead More Here

SUMMARY:Preaching with an Ecological Lens
DESCRIPTION:Ministry Personnel and LLWLs\, \nAre you looking for ways to address the climate crisis from the pulpit? \nJoin us online Tuesday Feb 4th\, 2025 7:00-8:30PM \nPreaching with an Ecological Lens \nA workshop offered by the Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim Cragg\, \nPrincipal and Professor of Preaching at Emmanuel College. \n\nThe Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg is the 14th Principal and Professor of Preaching at Emmanuel College. She is the first racialized person holding both roles. Kim-Cragg received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2020\, the highest honor granted to Emmanuel Alumni. She has been actively involved in the preaching life of the United Church of Canada\, a denomination that has been aspiring to become an intercultural and anti-racist church for the last 25 years. As a leading postcolonial scholar\, she has written or contributed to over 15 books including her monographs Interdependence: A Postcolonial Feminist Practical Theology (2018) Postcolonial Preaching: Creating a Ripple Effect (2021)\, both are claimed as original contributions in homiletics and practical theology. Her most recent book is Moments in Time: Sermons from the United Church of Canada 1910-2020 (UCPH\, 2024). Currently\, she is preparing a manuscript for preaching addressing the climate crisis and ecological justice with a tentative title\, A Homiletic of the EARTH. She is grateful to share some of her current research in this workshop. \nWorkshop: Preaching with an Ecological Lens \nIn this workshop Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg will share her insights into challenges faced by those of us who wish to address the climate crisis from the pulpit. She proposes five homiletical strategies that may help preachers and congregations face these challenges and tackle this crisis. The five strategies can be remembered using the acronym of E.A.R.T.H. which stand for the Elements of Life\, Animals in the Bible\, Rhythm of Life\, Tree of Life\, and Hesed (God’s unconditional love). Once briefly reviewing these five\, Kim-Cragg will note the Elements of Life as Water\, Fire\, Air\, and Soil that are prevalent in the Bible and well used as theological metaphors. She will focus on air\, Ruah in Hebrew. With the deepened appreciation of this sacred element of life\, Kim-Cragg will offer how to proclaim the Gospel for the sake of the Planet Earth. \nThere is no registration fee. The costs of this workshop are fully covered by Antler River Watershed\, Horseshoe Falls and Western Ontario Waterways Regional Councils. \nFor more information contact Thérèse Samuel (Minister\, Right Relations and Social Justice) tsamuel@united-church.ca \nClick to register for “Preaching with an Ecological Lens” online workshop. \nThe costs of this workshop are fully covered by Antler River Watershed\, Horseshoe Falls and Western Ontario Waterways Regional Councils.

SUMMARY:Fishbowl – Cross Generational Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Regional Councils of ARW\, HF and WOW in partnership with The Hub and Trinity UC Kitchener-\nThursday November 28th\, 2024\, 6:30-8:30 (all participants are asked to arrive at 6:40). \nBackground: Post-pandemic\, Youth leaders struggle to put together groups. A message often heard from youth in the church is that what’s being offered doesn’t work for them. Being an intercultural church includes finding ways to bridge communication between different age groups/generations. \nGoal– To offer a forum that brings together youth and Elders in the church– a forum that allows the two groups to hear one another and be heard by one another\, and to consider what might be the Spirit’s invitation to the church for youth ministry at this time. \nFISHBOWL PROCESS: \n8 Youth (teens to twenty-somethings) and 8 Elders (45+) from WOW\, HF and ARW Regional Councils and facilitators will gather via Zoom. \n\nDiscussion questions will invite each to share and listen to experiences of their own youth faith formation\, and hopes and challenges for youth ministry then and now.\nOn each question\, using the Zoom spotlight feature to focus on one group of eight:\n\nYouth will invite one another to share\, while the Elders listen.\nPlaces will be switched\, and the Elders will invite one another to share while the Youth listen.\nFor some questions\, the order might be reversed\, with Elders sharing first\n\n\nAfter two rounds of sharing in separate groups\, Youth and Elders will have an opportunity to reflect together as one group.\n\nEach group will be invited to reflect on what they have heard and consider possible next steps. \nParticipants will be given questions for reflection and feedback\, to be submitted in writing following the session. \nThis is a cross-cultural listening event\, and a pilot project. This session will not focus on problem solving or planning. The focus of this event is to listen and learn about one another as a first step of re-visioning youth ministry in ARW\, HF and WOW in this post-pandemic time. \nAn HONORARIUM of $105 is available for participants who are not otherwise paid for their time in this discussion. \nTo apply\, complete the Application Form : \nhttps://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=qLUYz3gmEUCTEhXw9xV1dPBWSFWIXSNPila5mgKiAchUM0NLV0kyWUtVM1JXUEcyOUw4QlVaRlVDUS4u \nApplication deadline November 18\, 2024 \n  \nFor more information contact: \nThérèse Samuel tsamuel@united-church.ca \nKathy Douglas kdouglas@united-church.ca \nAdam Cresswell – hubleadership@gmail.com \nAimee Belanger at youthevents@hubcommunity.ca

SUMMARY:Ask An Expert
DESCRIPTION:We’re trying something new. We’re introducing an Ask An Expert series in partnership with the General Council Office. You ask the questions\, and we’ll provide the expertise. \nWho are the experts? Well\, it depends on the topic and staff availability. \nMaybe you want to know more about the insurance partnership between the GCO and Communities of Faith. Or what you do when the local newspaper calls (or when you want to get a good story out). Or what the new government relations officer does. Or what the cost-of-living-adjustment is. \nIt’s kind of like a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure book. Here’s how it works: \n1. You send us your questions here: https://forms.office.com/r/q7UM9spU9z \n2. We find the expert who can answer them. \n3. We all tune in on Wednesday September 18th\, 7-8 p.m. by Zoom here: https://united-church.zoom.us/j/89972136949 \n4. As many questions will be answered as can be within the allotted time. Unanswered questions will carry over to the next session\, or we’ll answer them on our Regional Council Facebook group. \n5. Tough questions are okay. We’ll do our best to answer them\, and if we can’t on the spot\, we’ll follow up with the right information. \nSo\, pick your adventure. Will it be insurance? Or grants? Climate justice? Governance? Media relations? Government relations? Global partnerships? Or something else? \nYou pick. Ask your question here: https://forms.office.com/r/q7UM9spU9z.  Join us on Wednesday September 18th at 7 p.m. to get an answer in real time. Don’t have a question right now? Listeners welcome! \nThis session will be facilitated by: Michelle Owens
