Remit 1 has Passed – April 9, 2024
The votes have now been counted! Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization HAS PASSED.
What happens now? As is the case with all Category 3 Remits, if a remit has been approved by a majority of all the regional councils, the General Council must decide to enact it. The decision on enacting the remit will take place at the Annual Meeting of General Council, on October 19, 2024. When the remit has been enacted, the change will be included in the next edition of The Manual. (The process for remits is outlined in the United Church Manual, in section F, on pages 108-111.)

Update on the Vote on Remit 1 – April 2, 2024
Thank you to all of the pastoral charges who voted! Vote results are currently still being tabulated. For votes that were mailed in by Canada Post, they will be counted as long as they were post-marked by March 31. Those mail-in ballots are still coming into the General Council Office at the moment. As such, the preliminary results of the Remit 1 vote will be communicated next week in various ways, including through the E-ssentials newsletter.

John was raised in Calgary. He has a Ph.D. in New Testament studies from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. His dissertation was on Paul’s use of the Hagar/Sarah motif in his letter to the Galatians and how it has been spun in the history of interpretation. This was a kind of case study into how biblical texts have been (i.e., can be) misread in the history of the church and the dangers thereof.
